Reading Time: 7 minutes
Want to give your hair some real TLC? Try CBD.
You read that right. CBD oil does more than just treat chronic pain and anxiety it can also take hair from good to great and thin to full. CBD oil for hair loss may not be the first thing you think about, but its natural composition and the way it interacts with the scalp and body will build strong roots for healthier hair.
The common causes of hair loss
Hair loss is common in both men and women. In fact, the average woman can lose up to 100 strands of hair a day. From brushing, over styling, stress, hormone issues and genetics, it’s not just age that causes hair loss and hair thinning. Sufficient iron, vitamins and rest all help to prevent hair loss, along with other practices such as protecting the hair when heat styling and limiting chemical treatments. There are prescription products and other medications that may help with hair loss and to promote hair growth, but CBD offers a more natural way to deal with thinning or hair loss.
You may have heard of CBD’s positive effects on muscle and joint pain or its ability to help improve sleep, especially for those with anxiety and depression. We’ve also shared CBD’s amazing impact on skin issues and how it can elevate your skincare routine. But how can CBD help with hair? For the same reasons it’s used for the mental and physical ailments listed above, as we explain below, CBD can also work with the body’s systems naturally to deliver benefits for healthier, stronger hair.
CBD oil or hemp oil for hair?
While CBD oil and hemp oil come from the same hemp plant and both offer healthy, natural benefits, the two types of oil are not interchangeable.
CBD (cannabidiol) derived from the hemp plant offers a host of health and wellness benefits to the mind and body with very low traces of THC (less than 0.3% to be exact), meaning it has no psychoactive effects and will not get you high. CBD oil can be derived from cannabis or hemp plants, however it is not the same as hemp oil. Hemp oil is sourced from industrial hemp seeds and is also referred to as hemp seed oil; CBD oil, on the other hand, is sourced from the aerial parts of the plant (flowers, leaves, stems). Since cannabinoids do not exist in the hemp plant seeds, hemp oil does not contain any THC or CBD. However, hemp oil does offer several benefits to the mind and body on its own, including high amounts of healthy fatty acids such as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty and linoleic acids, which stimulate our bodies’ natural production of cannabinoids. Hemp oil is also proven to replenish moisture and natural oils to hair and skin.
Full spectrum CBD or Isolate CBD?
The type of CBD oil also makes a difference in delivering the most benefits to your body and hair. Full-spectrum CBD contains all cannabinoids found in the cannabis or hemp plant, which work together to increase the benefits of CBD. Isolate CBD contains only one cannabinoid (CBD), which has been completely separated from other compounds in the plant. This process of cannabinoid isolation decreases overall bioavailability and absorption into the body.
Full spectrum CBD products are whole plant derived and, in addition to cannabinoids, include terpenes, flavonoids, essential oils and amino acids. Studies have shown that full spectrum CBD products offer higher levels of relief from pain, anxiety and inflammation. Full spectrum CBD oil therefore, can deliver better results for hair loss and hair growth solutions.
CBD oil for a healthy scalp
Let’s get to the root of the problem: healthy hair cannot thrive with a dry scalp. Apart from problems such as dryness leading to itchiness, and sometimes dandruff and breakage, a dry scalp can cause irritation and inflammation. CBD oil can help suppress inflammation in the skin and body and is used to treat other skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea and irritation from acne.
One study found that Cannabidiol contains antibacterial and antifungal effects, which can help clear clogged pores and an oily scalp which lead to other skin irritations and hair problems.
Applying CBD oil to the scalp can help reduce inflammation, moisturize the scalp, and naturally interact with the scalp’s sebaceous glands, which secrete oil or sebum in the scalp specifically. By stimulating the scalp’s natural oils to lubricate hair follicles and hair, CBD can help relieve scalp dryness and stimulate healthier hair follicles.
Tip: Apply CBD oil directly onto the scalp and gently massage the oil into your hair using the tips of your fingers. This can be done two to three times a week before washing your hair.
CBD Oil for hair growth
Nothing gets the blood flowing like a massage and the same can be said for the scalp and hair. By applying CBD oil and working it into the hair and scalp with your fingers you’re stimulating blood circulation. In addition, CBD oil itself helps to increase cerebral blood flow, delivering more nutrients to the follicles making for stronger hair and promoting new hair growth.
CBD works with your Endocannabinoid System, or ECS, to maintain bodily homeostasis (or balance), allowing your body to better handle factors in the external environment that could impact hair loss. One of the three main components of the ECS are endocannabinoids, along with cannabinoid receptors and metabolic enzymes. Endocannabinoids are molecules the body produces that bind to cannabinoid receptors and proteins throughout your central and peripheral nervous systems. When CBD is introduced into the ECS, it acts as a defensive force that blocks enzymes like fatty acid amide hydrolase and monoacylglycerol from breaking down the endocannabinoids that your body naturally produces.
CBD oil also contains natural essential oils and amino acids, found in almost all tissues including hair. By working with the body’s natural systems, CBD works to naturally support hair growth.
CBD Oil for thinning hair
As we age, the fullness of our hair begins to naturally diminish, but thinning hair can also be attributed to illness or medical conditions, lack of collagen, vitamins and even increased stress and lack of sleep. Thinning hair can also be attributed to genetics. While we can’t always control thinning hair, there are non-medical or prescription ways to help keep hair strong, and therefore thicker looking and feeling.
Each hair follicle is made up of a protein called keratin. As mentioned above, CBD oil contains amino acids, essentially the building blocks of protein, which can help to naturally strengthen hair and reduce dryness. When hair is dry the texture can become brittle and easily break, causing more hair loss. By strengthening the strands with CBD oil, thinning hair can rebuild strength and create a fuller look.
CBD Oil for hair loss
CBD oil is an added tool to a healthy diet, good rest, and healthy hair habits – all things that contribute to the prevention of hair loss. While CBD may not be the single solution for hair loss, it works with the body’s natural systems that create the foundation for healthier, stronger hair. If poor sleep is causing hair loss, CBD’s ability to create mental and physical balance may help you achieve better rest. If scalp irritation, infection or dryness is causing your hair to fall out, become thin, or break off, CBD can help replenish the scalp’s natural oils to fortify follicles and promote hair growth. If your strands themselves are weak and prone to breakage from thinning out, CBDs natural makeup of protein adds to the keratin already found in the hair. Pair your CBD solution with the other healthy hair habits and, within a few weeks to a month, you may see a difference with consistent and safe use, depending on the severity of your hair loss issues and whether other factors such as medication or illness come into play.
CBD oil for hair can also be ingested, there are also other ingestible CBD products such as capsules or gummies. CBD oil form is often considered the best way to consume CBD as it is fast acting and can be accurately dosed.
Start off by applying ½ ml to 1 mL of CBD oil sublingually (under the tongue) and letting it dissolve for a minute, then swallow any remaining oil. Continue this for a few weeks, monitoring how you feel—keep in mind that it can take several days for you to feel the effects of CBD, so don’t feel discouraged if you do not notice a difference right away. After two to three weeks, gradually adjust your dosage if necessary.
Since CBD oil derived from hemp does not have any intoxicating effects, it is not possible to overdose on this product and is considered safe for the majority of adults (and even pets!). However, if you do take too large of a dose, you may experience some side effects, such as nausea or fatigue. resolveCBD tinctures have droppers that are clearly marked so you can measure out your exact dose, every time.
We’ve also created a dosage chart and quiz so you can find the right dosage for you.
