Who could benefit from using CBD?

Reading Time: 6 minutes

You might be an athlete, a working professional or even the average Jane/Joe asking yourself this question: “Can I benefit from using CBD?” If you’ve been asking yourself this question don’t worry, you are not alone.

Like many others, you might be on the fence about jumping into the CBD world, so we are here to help you and maybe dip your toe in.  The first question you should ask yourself is who can benefit from using CBD and am I one of those people? No need to worry, we will go through our top sections and see if any of these categories resonate with you.

What is CBD?

First thing first, what is CBD? Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a chemical compound derived from the hemp plant. It is one of over 100 compounds found in the plant, known as cannabinoids. Unlike its counterpart, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD does not have psychoactive properties, meaning it does not produce the “high” commonly associated with cannabis use. CBD has been shown to have potential therapeutic benefits, which has led to a growing interest in its use. CBD is believed to work by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which regulates pain, inflammation, mood, sleep, and other physiological processes. Some potential benefits of CBD include pain relief, anxiety and depression reduction, improved sleep, epilepsy treatment, and anti-inflammatory effects.

Who can benefit from CBD?

Now that we understand a little bit more about the CBD compound, let’s take a look at these 8 categories of “who” could potentially benefit from using CBD.

People With Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is a common condition that can be caused by a variety of factors, including injury, illness, or ongoing health conditions.  It can be a debilitating condition that significantly affects a person’s quality of life.  While traditional pain medications such as opioids can be effective in managing chronic pain, they can also come with a risk of addiction, side effects, and tolerance.

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, CBD can potentially help individuals affected by chronic pain by directly interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system. An extensive 2022 study explains how CBD and the endocannabinoid system interact with each other to regulate pain, inflammation and pain relief.

There are different types of chronic pain but the ones you hear the most about are arthritis and joint pain, migraines and multiple sclerosis. Unlike some other prescribed pain medication, CBD oil can help users manage their pain while still enabling them to proceed with daily tasks like driving and working. As we know, CBD oils have anti-inflammatory properties to reduce pain symptoms and can help to make it easier to sleep when combating chronic pain.

Research into how CBD can directly impact types of chronic pain is still underway and positive results are coming out. Such as this 2016 study that was done on rats to identify the correlation between CBD and arthritis for pain relief. The researchers concluded that after four days of applying gel on rats with joint inflammation, the levels of inflammation diminished compared to rats that did not receive CBD as treatment.

People with Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety and depression are two of the most common mental health conditions affecting people today.  While traditional medications and therapies can be effective in managing these conditions, they can also come with a risk of side effects and the potential for addiction. A 2015 study strongly supports that CBD has the potential to help with anxiety as an alternative medicine.

CBD may also be a promising alternative for people who want to avoid the potential risks and side effects associated with traditional medications. CBD has been shown to have a low risk of side effects, and it is not addictive like some medications used to treat anxiety and depression.

People with Sleep disorders

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that can be caused by a variety of factors, including anxiety, chronic pain, and other underlying medical conditions. CBD may help improve sleep quality and duration by reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation.

Studies have shown that CBD may have a calming effect on the central nervous system, which can help reduce anxiety and improve sleep. One study published in the Permanente Journal found that CBD was effective in improving sleep and reducing anxiety in a small sample of adults with insomnia. Another study found that CBD may help reduce daytime sleepiness and improve the quality and quantity of sleep in individuals with chronic pain.

People with Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that is characterized by recurrent seizures. While there are a number of medications available to treat epilepsy, some people with the condition do not respond well to these drugs or experience significant side effects.

In short, does CBD help with seizures? The answer is yes. CBD can help prevent some types of seizures in some people and animals. Clinical trials have demonstrated a significant reduction in seizures for people taking CBD to treat Lennox-Gastaut, Dravet syndrome, or tuberous sclerosis complex. Research in other areas is still in the early stages, but there are indications that CBD may help prevent other types of seizure or increase the efficacy of other antiepileptic medications

People with Skin conditions

You might not have known that CBD can actually help with some skin conditions.  We know that CBD can help with inflammation and itching.  This brings us to a common skin condition that might benefit from CBD use, eczema. Eczema is a hypersensitivity of the skin to the environment, much like asthma is a hypersensitivity of the lungs to the environment. So far few studies have indicated that there is an anti-inflammatory role and an anti-itch role associated with certain cannabinoids that can help reduce inflammation, redness, and itching on the skin.

Another Skin Condition that might benefit from the use of CBD is Psoriasis.  It is a condition that causes the epidermis to grow much more quickly than the normal epidermis which results in overly flaky skin. There is convincing data showing that certain cannabinoid receptors in the body may help slow down rapid skin growth, which results in slowing down the excess flaking.

Athletes

With all the healing properties CBD holds, it is not surprising that athletes and CBD make an amazing pair. Muscle soreness, difficulty sleeping, stress and anxiety are all symptoms that athletes encounter and, as we saw, CBD has been proven time and time again that may help with these symptoms.

Some studies suggest that athletes that use CBD, as an ergogenic aid, improve the efficacy and efficiency of recovery processes during exercise and sport-related fatigues.  CBD appears to have some properties that could boost exercise recovery as an anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, analgesic, anxiolytic, and pain reliever.

We also cannot forget the new wave of athletes that now compete in more of a cerebral aspect compared to the traditional physical aspect called e-athletes. E-athletes or Esport athletes are fairly recent terms, instead of playing traditional sports, they play competitive video games such as Dota 2, Counter-Strike and Valorant.

Gaming has started to become more and more mainstream, the surge in what we now call e-athletes has been popping up. Sure, the physical strains are not the same since the career/hobby is mostly spent on focus and reaction times but nonetheless, it is a strenuous hobby. Some e-athletes have been looking for something to help them focus or destress after a tournament and some have found that CBD fits in perfectly. It gives them a sense of calm and mental clarity to help them make more informed decisions even when they need to think within a blink of an eye.

Older Adults

For older adults, CBD may offer several potential benefits. One of the most significant is pain relief. Chronic pain and arthritis are common issues for many older adults, and CBD has been shown to help alleviate pain by reducing inflammation.

CBD may also have potential benefits for older adults with anxiety or sleep issues. Anxiety and sleep disturbances are also common issues among older adults, and CBD has been shown to have calming effects and improve sleep quality.

Pets

As in humans, pets may similarly experience the same issues that humans do.  Pet CBD can be a great reliever of stress, anxiety, help reduce inflammation and improve your furry friend’s quality of life. When you think about it, pets are very empathic meaning, if you are stressed so are your pets.  If you are helping yourself by taking CBD and seeing the results why not also think about procuring and administering CBD to your pet?  Their lives revolve around you, their best friend, they only want what is best for you. So why not reciprocate and give them all the help they would need, because you know they’d do the same for you.

All in all, there is a CBD product for everyone.  You just need to find the right one in the right doses. It may just improve your quality of life and give you that extra motivation to continue achieving your goals in life and enjoy every moment of your day.
